Étymol. et Hist. 1928 (Lar. 20e). Anglo-amér. big-horn, bighorn(s) désignant une race de moutons sauvages des montagnes Rocheuses, attesté dep. 1805 (Clark dans Lewis & C. Exped. I, 282 dans DAE). L'amér. big(-)horn est composé de l'adj. big « gros, grand » et de horn « corne » en raison des cornes énormes de ces moutons. Bighorn s'emploie aussi adjectivement bighorn sheep. Il correspond au lat. sc. Ovis montana (DAE) et Ovis canadensis (Webster's).
